Incredimail migrate to Thunderbird
11/21/2011 - Computers
If you are looking to migrate away from Incredimail, here's the steps I took to help a client migrate to Mozilla Thunderbird:
-
Download and install incredimail converter direct from google code, or I am mirroring it here if the project gets removed or expires.
-
Disconnect from the internet so no new messages get downloaded into incredimail while doing the migration.
-
Open incredimail, choose file->import and export->export contacts. Choose export contacts.
-
Close incredimail.
-
Make a backup of your identities directory which is located here in windows XP:
c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\IM\Identities\{long string of txt}\Message Store
-
If you don't see the Local Settings folder in you username directory, you will have to go to the tools menu, view tab, choose "show hidden files and folders".
-
Copy the above directory to another location on your hard drive or external device. I put it in c:\bak
-
Now open incredimail converter, choose the Message Store directory from the location that you copied it to. In my case, c:\bak\Message Store
-
Once the conversion takes place, it will make folder's for each mailbox folder that incredimail had.
-
In Thunderbird, you can install the add on Import Export Tools. Once that is installed, you will have to re-start thunderbird.
-
Once your account is setup, you can go to the tools menu, then ImportExportTools menu, choose Import all eml files from a directory, and also from it's subdirectories.
-
Choose the location of your transferred files. For me c:\bak\Message Store
-
You messages should now all be imported into thunderbird.
-
To transfer your address book, choose from the tools menu, Import. Choose address books, choose text file (LDIF, tab, csv, txt). Be sure to change the files of type to show all files so you can see the incredimail exported contacts file. Choose your file exported from incredimail and it will now be in your address book.
Some of these steps may vary depending on your operating system and version of Incredimail. I just used this process with Thunderbird 8.0 and Incredimail 2.0 build 6295055
